How do I attach my Guitar Strap?
There are a couple of methods. First of all there should be an end pin at the bottom of the guitar. By "end pin" I mean a small rounded piece of plastic or wood that plugs into the hole in the bottom of a guitar so that a strap can be attached. By "bottom of the guitar" I mean the part of the guitar that would be touching the floor if the guitar were standing on the floor with the headstock - the part with the tuners on it - pointed toward the ceiling.
If the guitar has an electric pick up the end pin will often be replaced by a specially designed plug that will serve as an end pin. Every steel string acoustic guitar I've seen has an end pin of some sort. However, classical guitars (nylon string) often don't. If you have a nylon string guitar skip down to the last part of this message.
If you have a steel string guitar and there is no end pin, there should at least be a hole in the bottom of the guitar If there is a hole in the bottom you can go to a reputable guitar store and purchase an end pin. While you are there you can also get a strap, if you don't have one.
Straps come in a wide variety of designs and materials but the essential elements are the holes located in pieces of leather/plastic on each end. You can button your end pin into one of the holes. The hole on the other end of the strap should have a strong piece of string tied through it. The string will look something like a shoe lace. You can tie this string (firmly!) around the headstock of your guitar. Tie this string around the neck, between the nut (the piece of bone or plastic that separates the fretboard from the headstock) and the first set of tuners. Obviously, you want the tied piece of string to go under the guitar strings.
The strap should have some type of adjustment feature which will allow you to position the guitar in a way that is comfortable and gives your hands plenty of freedom for playing. The strap should support the guitar so your hands don't have to. While you are at the music store you may want to see about having a strap pin mounted on the heel of your guitar. The heel is the part of the neck that attaches to the body of the guitar. If you have a strap pin you don't need to worry about using the "shoe string". You simply button the piece of leather onto the strap pin. This is the way I have my guitars set up. It gives a better sense of balance and control.
